Who We Are and What We Do

Volunteers

Who Are We:

The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that was founded at St. Patrick’s Parish in 1904. At 111 years old, our organization is one of the oldest nonprofits in the St. Joseph County area to provide direct support to people in the community. Since 1904, we have expanded our programs and now serve more than 70,000 people each year.

What We Do:

The St. Vincent de Paul Society does more than operate thrift stores. Through our location on Crescent Avenue, we provide financial assistance, emergency food, clothing and furniture vouchers, low cost goods through our thrift stores, and educational resources to break the cycle of poverty. We are the only nonprofit organization that provides emergency services by doing into a person’s home. At our core, we strive to make our community a better place to live. We empower individuals to attain self-suffiency while maintaining their dignity.

What You Can Do:

There are several ways for you to get involved. To begin, you can donate your time by volunteering. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to help as many clients as we do; last year, our volunteers provide more than $1.1 million worth of labor hours. Additionally, you can donate material goods. You can either take your donations to one of our drop off locations, or you can schedule a home pick-up for large material donations. For a list of drop off locations, visit http://svdpsb.org/drop-off-locations.htm. Your material donations may be received by someone in need or purchased by someone in the community. The profits from the thrift stores are reinvested in our programs, enabling us to do more good work in the community. Lastly, you can donate either by sending a check to 520 Crescent Ave., South Bend, IN 46617, or you can visit our website (www.svdpsb.org) and click “DONATE.”
